Interpretive Planning for the Historic Reeder Citrus Ranch: National Images and Changing Realities of Southern California

Consultation and site visits for the interpretation of a citrus ranch in Southern California.

The George C. and Hazel H. Reeder Heritage Foundation requests a Consultation Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to support an interpretive planning project for the Historic Reeder Citrus Ranch, a newly established historic site, to establish an intellectual framework for public programs based upon emerging scholarship on Southern California's citrus industry. Utilizing such humanities themes as the emergence of cooperation and corporate strategies in American agriculture, urban history, business and marketing history, immigration, labor, and race relations, ethnic identity and community building, the interpretive framework will guide visitors beyond the popular promotional mythology to a gain a broader understanding of the ways in which the citrus industry influenced the development of modern California and played a role in changing trends in American agriculture and business.
