Ancillary public humanities programs to accompany the NEH on the Road: The Bison traveling exhibition.

Each year, Hastings Museum holds the Native American Festival which is attended by over 800 children and adults from the region. Hands-on activities targeting school-age children demonstrate historic and present day arts produced by tribes from across the Great Plains. We strive to involve tribal people in these activities when possible. In 2010, the Museum will host The Bison American Icon to enhance existing exhibits and coincide with the annual Native American Festival. During the festival, activities and learning stations will focus on how tribes historically used bison and its continued importance in their culture today. This grant will help fund two American Indian speakers/presenters for the festival. One speaker will talk about the bison in American Indian stories and oral history. The other presenter will show how bison were and still are used in American Indian tradition and daily life. Both presenters will talk with attendees throughout the days events.
