The consultant will prepare a condition report and detailed plan for the renovation of an on-site cold storage vault. The films and videos date from the late 1800s to contemporary works, focusing on independent and avant-garde productions by individuals.
A NEH Preservation Assistance Grant for Smaller Institutions will support the hiring of a consultant to create a thorough condition report and detailed plan for the total renovation and refrigeration of AFA's on-site cold vault. AFA is the largest international archive and exhibitor of independent and experimental cinema with a collection containing thousands of unique, original and historic prints, negatives and videos. The cold vault, which is presently cooled by two window air conditioner units, does not consistently maintain the recommended or desired climate for long-term conservation of the over 9,000 films and videos contained therein. AFA's ultimate goal is for the consultant to provide a step-by-step outline of what must be undertaken to upgrade the current storage conditions, including recommendations for construction, refrigeration equipment, new shelving and proper facility maintenance. |
