Preserving the Free Library of Philadelphia's Pennsylvania German manuscripts
The free Library of Philadelphia Foundation request a grant of $200,000 to conserve approximately 60 and to digitize approximately 20 Pennsylvania German manuscripts from the Free Library of Philladelphia's collections. These materials are important historical resources for scholars and the general public and provide insight into the early American practices and traditions that helped to shape the current national identity. The manuscripts document the religious, business, trade, textile, and educational practices prevalent during the 1700s and 1800s, and the collection includes objects by several prominent Americans. The proposed project, including $200, 568 in matching funds, will promote these nationally significant resources and ensure that they are preserved for future generations. This is a two-year project that will begin on April 1, 2011 and end on March 31, 2013.
