Picturing Shakespeare is a two-year project to create a searchable, browseable, and expandable database of 10,000 high-resolution digital images of prints, drawings, and photographs relating to Shakespeare and Shakespeare's era. The Folger Shakespeare Library holds the world?s largest collection of Shakespeare-related visual resources. Humanities scholars have drawn on this collection in person for decades using a card catalog. In today?s scholarly environment, however, users require off-site access to digitial surrogates and enhanced subject indexing. Picturing Shakespeare is designed for scholars, and also for teachers using images in the classroom and general users needing a picture library. Users will be able to access the database at no charge, download low-resolution images for free, or purchase high resolution images for reproduction. Users of the advanced features will additionally be able to save search results online as personal ?portfolios.? |
