This project will to bring to completion work begun in August 2008 under a 2-year NEH grant to create a "born digital" edition of the writings of two South Carolina women planters. Their letters, diaries, recipe books, plantation inventories, financial records, wills and other legal documents spanning 1739-1830 document the significant political events and people of the late colonial and early national period, as well as the everyday activities of managing households and plantations and raising families. They also document the lives of their slaves. Pinckney is best known for introducing the cultivation of indigo, a key staple crop of 18th century coastal Carolina. Her daughter Harriott was one of the early planters to introduce tidal-flow rice cultivation in the Santee River basin. The edition will use TEI encoding, and be published by the Univ. of VA Press's Rotunda. One more year of funding will allow full annotation and publication of all 1000 documents collected & transcribed. |
