The Yale Edition of the Works of Samuel Johnson

Completion and preparation for publication of the last two (out of twenty-three) volumes of the works of 18th-century English writer Samuel Johnson, and development of a digital edition. (36 months)

The purpose of the Yale Edition of the Works of Samuel Johnson is to make widely available the works of Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) in carefully edited volumes, with full textual apparatus, and with introductions and commentary to guide the "informed literate reader." Twenty-one volumes are published or in press. Two volumes remain to be completed in the period of the grant: "Early Biographical Writings" and "Miscellaneous Prose." As these volumes are being completed, we intend to create and incorporate them into the Digital Edition of the Yale Johnson, with the full cooperation of Yale University Press. By providing a web-based system for content aggregation, scholarship, and publishing, Yale University Press's Digital Scholarship Platform will facilitate and advance the goals of the original Johnson project. The Digital Yale Johnson will be more widely available than the Print Edition, and it will enable new kinds of research as well as links to related digital projects.
