This project will bring together the records of Kentucky’s Civil War chief executives, 3 Union governors and 2 Confederate governors. It will produce a beta version of the digital documentary edition, including 4,000 to 5,000 transcribed and edited documents, to be completed during the grant cycle. This prototype will be used to test and develop the Web interface, as the editing of the remaining in-scope documents is completed. Total completion of the project will occur by 2016-17. The PKCWG/DDE promises to become an indispensable tool for the exploration of nationally significant questions related to the Civil War. These documents will advance new understandings of the social, military, political, and cultural history of this era in U.S. history. Preservation of these documents in a globally accessible form will increase new research on Civil War-era Kentucky, and will help to reshape what we think we know about the national narrative. |
