(36 months)
Funding is requested to edit and prepare for publication the North American Journals of Prince Maximilian of Wied (German, 1782-1867). Three manuscript volumes at Joslyn contain the Prince's observations on his 1832-34 expedition from the eastern United States up the Missouri River to Montana. His 1839-41 book, Reise in das innere Nord-Amerika in den Jahren 1832 bis 1834, omitted much original journal material; the 1843 English edition was further abridged; each is out of print. Joslyn has a full, modern English translation of the journals and has begun their thorough annotation. This matchless record by a trained scientist of a young America, especially of the Missouri frontier, will be of value to both scholars and lay audiences. |
