Secession: An International Phenomenon
A conference and volume of essays on the topic of secession in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and other countries, bringing together scholars in history, philosophy, law, and the social sciences. (24 months)
This proposal is part of a larger project that will include: 1) a conference in Charleston, SC in December 2007; 2) a workshop for authors of a book of essays in May 2008; and 3) production of the book itself. The University of South Carolina has committed seed funding for the conference, and the Watson-Brown Foundation has agreed to support the workshop. This proposal asks for funds primarily to broaden support for conference participants and provide released time for the project director. This project will bring together leading scholars in history, philosophy, law, and the social sciences to take a fresh look at one of the most fundamental causes of human violence in the modern world: secession. The conference and book are sponsored by ARENA, a new international organization devoted to broadening and invigorating the discussion of nationalism. The Project Director is experienced in organizing international conferences and editing interdisciplinary collections of essays.
