The Arab World's Demographic Dilemma: Young, Unemployed, and Searching for a Voice

Production of three, one-hour shows for a public radio series analyzing the challenges facing Arab youth today.

America Abroad Media (AAM) invites NEH to support a three-part documentary series for public radio entitled The Arab Worlds Demographic Dilemma: Young, Unemployed, and Searching for a Voice, and corresponding multimedia online features, including educational modules, for a grant of $498,419. Contemporary Arab youth confront daunting challenges, including a lack of economic opportunities, constraints on their freedom of expression, and the shifting nature of their identity. Scholarship on this complex and growing demographic has burgeoned in the last few years. Building on this scholarship, The Arab World's Demographic Dilemma will consist of three one-hour radio documentaries (narrated by Ray Suarez and Deborah Amos) that explore the identity, forms of expression, and economic hardships facing Arab youth. AAM will also produce state-of-the-art multimedia online features that complement the series as a whole, and will be made available to the public online on AAM's website.
