The Papers of Andrew Jackson: A Documentary Edition
Preparation for publication of volumes 12, 13, and 14 of the papers of Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), seventh president of the United States. (36 months)
The Papers of Andrew Jackson is a scholarly project to collect, edit, and publish, in print and online, the extant literary record of the seventh U.S. president. This research is vital for scholars of early U.S. political, social, diplomatic, and military history, and to political scientists, communications scholars, and researchers across the humanities. Our volumes engage with the rise of the U.S. nation-state, its relations with Indigenous nations and European empires, and contested definitions of citizenship, and thus respond to the "More Perfect Union" initiative. We are producing a scholarly edition of Jackson's papers in a seventeen volume bound series that is also available in two electronic formats. To date, we have published eleven volumes, with a twelfth (Volume XII: 1834) nearing completion; after that, we will have five more volumes to go. We expect to complete the full series by roughly 2035. The project URL is: https://thepapersofandrewjackson.utk.edu/.

The Papers of Andrew Jackson: A Documentary Edition
Preparation for
publication of volumes 11, 12, and 13 of the papers of Andrew Jackson (1767-1845),
seventh president of the United States. (36 months)
The Papers of Andrew Jackson is a project to collect and make available the entire extant literary record of the seventh president of the United States. Andrew Jackson was a pivotally important historical actor who remains today a fascinating and deeply polarizing figure. We have conducted an exhaustive worldwide search for documents and are now publishing them in a 17-volume hardbound edition and online in two formats, as open-access searchable volume pdfs and also with advanced integrative search features in the Rotunda Founding Era Collection. This grant will support publication of Volume XI and composition of Volume XII and Volume XIII. These volumes will present an authoritative record of three core years (1833-35) in Jackson's presidency, offering definitive annotated texts of documents on such issues as the Bank War, Indian removal, nullification, slavery and abolition, foreign affairs, and patronage and party-building, as well as on Jackson's highly controversial character.

The Papers of Andrew Jackson is a project to collect and publish the extant literary record of the seventh president. We have conducted an exhaustive worldwide search for documents and produced a comprehensive microfilm with accompanying Guide & Index, now posted on our website. We are publishing a 17-volume printed edition, of which the eight presidential volumes now in production make up the heart. This grant will support composition of the fourth through sixth presidential volumes, numbers 10 through 12 in the whole series, covering the years 1832 through 1834. Fully annotated and indexed, and including many documents hitherto unknown, this series will provide an authoritative record of Jackson's presidency and advance our understanding of a vast array of related subjects. In 2015 the University of Virginia Press's Rotunda imprint will incorporate all our published volumes in a Jackson Papers digital edition, cross-searchable with other Founding Era and Early Republic editions.

The Papers of Andrew Jackson
To support the preparation of an edition of the papers of Andrew Jackson.
The Papers of Andrew Jackson is a scholarly historical editing project, the goal of which is to collect and publish the extant literary record of the seventh president. The publications will be in two complementary media - a microfilm, including all documents and copies not on Library of Congress and National Archives films, and seventeen printed volumes, highly selective and carefully annotated to provide access to and background for the voluminous body of papers. The microfilm edition, 39 rolls of 35mm film, with a guide and index, was released in October 1986 and April 1987. The University of Tennessee Press has already published five volumes of the series (16 of Papers and a cumulative index). Volume 6 is ready to go to press, and the remaining volumes are scheduled for press delivery every twenty-four months, with completion in 2015.
