Ho?a Hou Ka Lamaku - Lighting a Path to New Digital Infrastructure for Bishop Museum Cultural Collections will provide transformative change for the care and sharing of digitized cultural heritage at Bishop Museum centered on the inclusion and attribution of Indigenous knowledge. This project will improve every aspect of our digital framework by investing in information systems and hardware; data standardization, integration, and digital asset management; and online platform development and outreach.

Mau ka Leo: Safeguarding Hawai'i's Genealogy of Knowledge and Lived Experience
The digitization of museum collections and museum staff knowledge through supporting 15 existing employees, and the hiring of a Digital Humanities Specialist to manage the project.
Through Mau Ka Leo, Bishop Museum proposes to capture institutional and cultural knowledge held by staff so that the collective voice(s) of Bishop Museum can endure for future generations. This project supports the salaries of staff members across our cultural and huma collections as well as the hiring of a Digital Humanities Specialist, who will manage the project under the direction of the Museum’s Director of Informatics. Additionally, a Humanities Advisory Committee will be established to define the guiding principles for recording knowledge and to support the development of themes and content throughout the project. In tandem with the migration of Museum collections already digitized to the EMu platform, this knowledge will be documented through EMu’s Narratives module, allowing for multiple ways of knowing to be presented and for connections to be made across departments. This information will be made accessible to the public through CultureConnect, an online experience platform.

Developing a Master Preservation Plan for the the World's Largest Hawaiian and Pacific Archaeology Collections
A planning project to improve storage and
environmental conditions for a collection of more than one million archaeological
artifacts from throughout the Pacific.
The Anthropology Department at
the Bishop Museum will develop a Master Preservation Plan for the Archaeology
Collections, which comprise an estimated 1.2 million artifacts and samples.
This project will assemble a team of qualified professionals consisting of a
conservator, a historic preservation specialist, a mechanical engineer, and collections
and facility staff members. The Master Preservation Plan builds on previous
museum-wide conservation surveys and will focus on assessing the preservation
needs and issues of the collections, environmental conditions, and collections
spaces, and make recommendations to mitigate risks that are sustainable and
specific to the varied collections, the museum, and Hawaii. The plan will
produce thoughtful and informed recommendations, implementation plans, and next
steps guide both the short- and long-term stewardship and preservation of the
collections, including plans for the consolidation of collections and HVAC
ductwork.
