Dead Sea Scrolls from Cave 1: New Editions and Translations
Preparation for publication of a new edition and translation of the Dead Sea Scrolls from Cave 1, discovered
near Qumran in Israel in the 1950s. (36 months)
This project will produce two scholarly editions and translations of the first Dead Sea Scrolls found in Cave 1. They will rely on new photographs of the Scrolls, taken with multi-spectral and reflectance transformation imaging, and will revise, update, and add critical commentary to these texts, originally published in 1955 only in French. Divided into two volumes now under contract in the new Dead Sea Scrolls Editions series (Brill), these new editions and translations will increase scholarly and general access to these texts in English translation and will aid in the general understanding of these often fragmentary texts. Through new introductions and commentary, the editors will highlight the ways in which these Cave 1 texts illuminate our understanding of the Bible and the origins of modern-day Judaism and the early followers of Jesus. These Scrolls also shed light on the rise of sacred texts and how the written word became central to many Western religious traditions.

The First Critical Edition of II-Isaiah
The 2000-year-old Dead Sea Scrolls predate other biblical manuscripts by centuries and have revolutionized study of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament text. Their rich evidence makes possible through the multi-volume Oxford Hebrew Bible a much-improved, critically established edition, as all the Greek and Latin classics and the New Testament have. As Chief Editor of the Biblical Scrolls, I edited the official publication of the 20 Isaiah scrolls and thus was chosen to do the OHB II-Isaiah volume. Every biblical scholar knows that in the medieval textus receptus there are mistakes and secondary readings, yet those are to this day printed in the main text of the Hebrew Bible. The proposed OHB II-Isaiah volume offers the best possible critical text, and will make available in both print and digital form to Bible translators, biblical scholars, students, and eventually the public (through Bible translations) a superior edition of one of the most important and beloved books of the Bible.

Post-Doctoral Fellowships in Middle Eastern Archaeology
The equivalent of two twelve-month fellowships a year for three years.
The W.F.Albright Institute is applying for 2 fellowships at $50,400 each, for a total of $100,800 per year, for each of the academic years 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14, plus related costs for publicity and selection in the amount of $6,000 per year. These would be continuous, residential fellowships at the Institute, which is located in Jerusalem. Fellows are expected to pursue a research project, give a public lecture to the academic community while in residence, and participate in the activities of the Institute's scholarly community. The fellows' research projects should culminate in a scholarly publication(s). The impact of this research, transmitted through the Albright's hundreds of alumni to institutions all over the world, has had a profound effect on the understanding of western civilization and its origins in the ancient Near East. The Albright supports scholarly work in Near Eastern studies from prehistory through the early Islamic period.

Critical Edition of Tosefta Order Tohorot: A Collection of Early Rabbinic Writings on Laws of Ritual Purity
Preparation of a critical edition of Order Tohorot of the Tosefta, part of the corpus of early rabbinic literature. (12 months)
This project will produce a critical edition of Tosefta Order Tohorot, one of the most difficult and neglected texts of early rabbinic Judaism covering all aspects of the biblical/rabbinic laws of ritual purity. Building on the methods developed by the late Prof. Saul Lieberman, the project will provide the world of scholarship for the first time with an accurate transcription of the sole surviving complete medieval manuscript of this text, together with a variants apparatus, extensive references to all relevant passages in the Talmudic and rabbinic literature, notes and comments, and a realia dictionary. In its final form, the critical edition will be approximately 1200 printed pages in length, and will also be made available online. It will provide an invaluable tool for a number of key fields of contemporary academic scholarship including the interpretation of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the study of the ancient material culture of the Eastern Roman Empire.
