The Schomburg Scholars-in-Residence Program (SIR) is one of The New York Public Library’s (NYPL) landmark research Fellowship programs. This project will bring three Fellows annually to the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture during the 2019-2022 academic years. During 6-month residential fellowships, these SIR Fellows will have the opportunity to use the Schomburg’s renowned collections in their research into the history and cultures of the peoples of Africa and the African Diaspora, fostering the creation of new humanities publications in the fields of African, African American, and African Diaspora studies. NYPL is requesting National Endowment for the Humanities support from the FPIRI program to support 18 months’ worth of Fellowship stipends each year, totaling 54 months of support over the grant period, along with selection expenses for the 2019-2020, 2020-2021, and 2021-2022 cohorts.

Funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities will cover 18 stipend months per year for three years as well as a portion of the costs associated with selecting fellows.

The New York Public Library (NYPL) respectfully requests $286,143 from the National Endowment for the Humanities to support stipend and selection expenses for Fellows in the Scholars-in-Residence Program at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Fellows will benefit from dedicated research space at the Schomburg Center, intellectual exchange with fellow scholars, and access to the Schomburg Center's 11 million item collection, which contains rare and unique materials chronicling the Black experience in America and abroad. Notable research collections at the Schomburg Center include the archives of James Baldwin, Maya Angelou, and Malcolm X; the records of the Civil Rights Congress; writings in 60 different African indigenous languages; artwork by Aaron Douglas, Jacob Lawrence, and Romare Bearden; photographs by Chester Higgins; and radio broadcasts and recordings by Marcus Garvey and Booker T. Washington, among many other items.

The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of The New York Public Library (NYPL) requests $191,051 in NEH funds for its Scholars-in-Residence Program to support 6 and 12 month residency fellowships to at least 9 scholars over a four-year period. Established in 1986, Schomburg's Scholars-in-Residence Program has provided direct support for 108 scholars, including 59 recipients of NEH fellowships. Since 1986, scholars have published 34 full-length monographs based on work completed during their residency; 15 of these were written by NEH fellows. NEH funding will allow the Center to continue to make fellowships available to humanities scholars whose work will directly benefit from extended access to the Center's rich and unique documentary resources on African Diasporan and African history and culture, as well as to the collections of the other 3 NYPL Research Libraries.

With funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Program will support the fellowships of its 2013-2014, 2014-2015, and 2015-2016 classes of Fellows.
