Nuestras Raices @Rhode Island Latino Arts (RILA) has been collecting the community history by organizing a series of community conversations (pláticas, or the Spanish word for “to talk or chat”) with members of the Latino community in Rhode Island. With a Challenge grant from the NEH, we were able to purchase equipment that allowed us to scan documents, film/record stories and then file them in our archives. During this phase, we are seeking funds to continue our very successful community pláticas and story collection. These stories will become source material for the creation of a series of dramatic readings/monologues based on the transcripts of the pláticas. In partnership with Trinity Repertory Company, the monologue/stories will be presented during our 6th season of Teatro en El Verano, in the summer of 2021. Additionally, the oral histories may become a full play and added to Trinity Rep's season calendar on a date to be determined in 2022. |

history materials and a series of complementary public programs (pláticas or
talks) focused on the Latino community in Rhode Island. The events would be managed by Rhode Island Latino
Arts (RILA), a community-based organization that has been collecting oral
histories in the state since 1991, many of which are available online through
support from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities. The proposed project would support a collaboration
between RILA and the Providence Preservation Society, faculty and students at
Roger Williams University, two public libraries, and one social services agency
to document the history, language, and heritage of Rhode Island Latinos through
the digitization of documents, such as photographs, personal papers, business
documents (menus, business cards, and brochures), and objects, such as woven
spools of yarn. With donor permission,
the digitized materials would be used to create a visual complement to RILA’s
oral histories through, among other projects, an expansion of a photo mural
project featuring Rhode Island Latino history on bus shelters in Providence.
To collect, document and preserve RI Latino history through community conversations and the arts. The first Community Archive on Latino History will be created, indexed and made accessible to the public. |

of a multigenerational video for the El Museo del Barrio, an outdoors living
museum to be installed on Broad Street, South Providence, Rhode Island.
El Museo del Barrio will provide space to train young Latinos to become “junior oral historians.” We will pair youth with elders to have conversations and encourage them to connect with their own community history and to see the relevancy of the past to their own lives. A bilingual videographer will mentor the youth to create video interviews that will become part of an existing Latino Archives Collections. |
