Vizcaya Museum and Gardens requests a $30,000 NEH Chairman’s Emergency grant to recover architectural and decorative sculptural elements from the Barge—a boat-shaped breakwater—that were toppled into Biscayne Bay by Hurricane Irma’s powerful storm surge. Additionally, grant funds will be used to repair one of these damaged sculptural elements—a herm designed by American artist Alexander Stirling Calder (1870-1945). These efforts will begin the restoration process for this significant and emblematic part of Vizcaya’s collections and vital barrier that protects the Main House and its art, furnishings and decorative objects.

Grant funds would also be used to purchase basic preservation supplies as recommended by the consultant. The Vizcayans is requesting a grant in the amount of $3,874 on behalf of Vizcaya Museum and Gardens to assess the storage and preservation needs of the Museum's collection of approximately 40 works on paper. These works - the majority of which were purchased by Vizcaya's creator, James Deering, during the construction of the estate in the 1910s - represent a diverse range of media and styles, including Japanese woodcut prints, Art Nouveau lithographs, etchings, and watercolor prints. Currently, the collection is stored in poor environmental conditions that have resulted in mold growth, pest infestation, water damage and, in some cases, light damage. A grant from NEH will enable Vizcaya to hire a conservator to assess the condition of the collection, including current storage issues and the individual preservation needs of each object.

The collections at Vizcaya, which is a National Historic Landmark, include Renaissance tapestries, ancient Roman sculptures, Chinese ceramics, Rococo furniture, European paintings, along with nearly 1,000 linear feet of archival collections including photographs, correspondence, blueprints, and financial records related to the construction and management of the estate. The Vizcayans requests a $6,000 grant to purchase 20 PEM2 data loggers to strengthen environmental monitoring and data analysis activities for Vizcaya Museum and Gardens' interior and archival collections. Vizcaya is a historic house museum and its interior collections consist of more than 2,500 objects that were acquired in the 1910s to build, furnish and decorate this Gilded Age estate. Representing 3 continents and spanning 2,000 years, the interior collections include ancient Roman sculptures, Renaissance tapestries, Chinese ceramics and Rococo furniture. Vizcaya's archives contain over 35,000 photographs and documents, the vast majority of which date to the estate's construction. The analysis of data collected via these loggers will enable Vizcaya to further strengthen preservation activities. Moreover, the collection of accurate environmental data is critical as Vizcaya plans to replace its aging HVAC system and make improvements to the envelopes of its historic buildings.
