Publication: Spenser Review
Date: 10/1/2014
Abstract: The Virtual Paul’s Cross Project: A Digital Re-creation of John Donne’s Gunpowder Day Sermon attempts to reconstruct the sermon-as-delivered by providing digital acoustical and visual renditions of Donne’s Gunpowder Day sermon of November 5th, 1622, at London’s preeminent preaching spot: the outdoor station of St. Paul’s Cathedral, called Paul’s Cross. The website provides several navigational categories: educational and contextual essays; an overview of the evidence and sources for the virtual reconstruction; details about the technological process of creating the virtual experience; discussion of Donne’s sermons and preaching; analysis of the ambient factors that might environ a sermon at Paul’s Cross; an outline of the evolution of Donne’s sermons, from idea to print; and, most importantly, several modules for visualizing and hearing Donne’s sermon in context. While its digital reenactments offer many teaching and research possibilities, the VPCP’s most significant intellectual cont

Black Walden
Grant details: FB-52999-07
Author(s): Linck Johnson
Publication: New England Quarterly
Date: 6/1/2010
Abstract: ....Through assiduous research, she [Lemire] has tracked the lives of many of those [Concord] slaves and their almost equally forgotten masters. The arc of her graceful narrative is shaped by the “intertwined lives” of the wealthy landowner John Cuming (Thoreau’s “Squire Cummings”) and Brister Freeman, his slave for twenty-five years (p. 13)…
Lemire has genuinely enriched our understanding not only of the history of Concord but also of the country for which that fabled town still so often stands.

Author(s): Richard Klayman
Publication: American Nineteenth Century History
Date: 4/30/2010
Abstract: This interesting book seeks to explore and explain the web-like impact of slavery in the history of Concord, Massachusetts, and it does so with great skill. The author succeeds in bringing to life a small but, as she explains, significant population of African Americans in a community deeply connected to the origins of the American Revolution and the intellectual life of antebellum America. Navigating between local history and national trends, Lemire provides a depth of understanding about slavery's relationship to economic and social mobility. Her perceptive comments about architecture, furniture, and other arts provides for a most perceptive unearthing of a place and its people, including its African Americans residents who have been greatly unknown. In particular, Lemire seeks to demonstrate that “Concord, Massachusetts, of all places, was a slave town. From its founding in 1635 until after the Revolution, enslaved men and women helped to build what would become New England's most s

Author(s): Evan Carton
Publication: American Literary History
Date: 10/16/2011
Abstract: [B]reathtaking…. Lemire’s meticulous and inspired archival research shows that “Concord, Massachusetts, of all places, was a slave town.”… Lemire, who grew up in the “privileged, leafy” neighboring town of Lincoln, generously describes her project as an attempt “to finish what Thoreau had started: the history of slavery in the place we both called home.” Imaginative and moral generosity, to both the black and the white eighteenth- and early-nineteenth century Concordians whose intimately entangled fortunes she chronicles, is a hallmark of her study. At the same time, Lemire is clear-eyed and clear-voiced about the facts and meanings of inter-racial Concord’s “long and brutal history.”… [E]legant writing and thinking… challenging and ethical historical criticism.

Author(s): Douglas R. Egerton
Publication: The History Teacher
Date: 2/1/2010
Abstract: Rendered forever famous by its most celebrated author, the woods around Walden Pond had shielded other sorts of refugees long before Henry David Thoreau built his cabin there in 1845. In discussing the open green spaces then admired by Concord's residents, Thoreau devoted a chapter of his book to the former slaves who had been driven to the village's margins and cultivated small patches by the pond. Elise Lemire aptly notes that these "green spaces began as black spaces" (p. 12). The small community of enslaved men and women—together with the equally small number of wealthy whites who owned them on the eve of the American Revolution—is the subject of this slim but passionate and elegantly written study…

History and Insight: Music and Politics in San Francisco
Grant details: FA-53011-07
Author(s): Gereben, Janos
Publication: San Francisco Classical Voice
Date: 10/7/2011
Abstract: SF Classical Voice is an on-line classical music magazine. Gereben praises the book, which was just released a few days earlier. One notable quote: "Few histories or musicological studies provide as lively and entertaining reading as Music and Politics. Years of extensive research — through interviews, newspapers, archives — resulted in a mother lode of data, but the marvel of Miller's book is how she makes all that information coalesce in a colorful, memorable narrative. Besides many "scoops" of hitherto unknown or little facts, and impressive scholarly exposition, Miller offers such quirky connections between music and Chinatown, Henry Hadley, Henry Cowell, Harry Partch, Ernest Bloch, and Lou Harrison."

The political side of music history in San Francisco
Grant details: FA-53011-07
Author(s): Stephen Smoliar
Publication: San Francisco Examier
Date: 12/27/2011
Abstract: Smoliar reviews and praises the book. One notable paragraph: "Through argumentation she establishes a claim and then sets about to marshal evidence to support the claim, summing up her findings in her final chapter just as a lawyer would deliver a closing statement. However, through exposition she embeds her evidence in a rich context of people, places, and things that fleshes out her reasoning and elevates it beyond the objective abstractions of mere logic. That context is then elaborated through a rich command of descriptive language (mastering what I have always believed is the most challenging of the text types). Finally, to emphasize that all of this involves “thinking in time,” she delivers the whole package with all the storytelling qualities of a good narrative."

Abstract: This timely book traces and attempts thereby to resuscitate the centrality of deliberative dynamics to American political and cultural life. Gustafson (English, Univ. of Notre Dame) establishes first that American republicanism relied on deliberation--as derived from classical and religious models--as antidote and complement to the compulsions of rhetorical suasion. Then, grounding her project in the republican oratory of Daniel Webster and his contemporaries, Gustafson assembles a "literary version of a deliberative poll" of antebellum authors, from Cooper and Child to Apess and Walker, on the possibilities and limits of deliberative processes; these figures "diagnose[d]" the antebellum deliberative crisis occasioned by slavery and sought to address the nation's travails through a variety of politicized aesthetics. The great strengths of this book are the comprehensiveness and nuance of Gustafson's analysis and the relevance of her project to a nation poised, then as now, on the brink

Rachel Zuckert, Kant on Beauty and Biology: An Interpretation of the Critique of Judgment
Grant details: FA-37510-03
Author(s): Fred Rauscher
Publication: Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews
Date: 2/10/2012
Abstract: Kant on Beauty and Biology is a bold and remarkable book. Zuckert takes a sweeping approach to Kant's thought while still engaging in detailed textual exegesis and debate with the secondary literature. Hardly a page goes by without reference to part of the literature (at least the English language part of it) on the various topics touched upon by her analysis. She deftly moves from issue to issue, anticipating and answering objections, to defend what to some will seem at first to be implausible claims. I am not entirely convinced of all the details, but I completed the book with a revised view of Kant's Critique of Judgment and its place in Kant's system.

Zuckert, Rachel. Kant on Beauty and Biology
Grant details: FA-37510-03
Author(s): Michael Rohlf
Publication: Review of Metaphysics
Date: 12/1/2008
Abstract: Most interpreters approach the work as a collection of separate discussions about aesthetics, various topics in the philosophy of science, and their relations to other topics in Kant's system. Many regard Kant's principle of purposiveness as too vague to impart any substantive unity to his treatment of these topics, and some argue that what coherence the work has derives from elsewhere. Rachel Zuckert, however, opposes such piecemeal approaches. Like Hannah Ginsborg and Cristel Fricke, Zuckert argues that the principle of purposiveness does provide a substantive basis for a unified interpretation, but Zuckert has written the only book that treats the entire Critique of Judgment as a unified work. She develops an original interpretation both of the principle of purposiveness and of how it unifies Kant's overall argument. It is a rich, often ingenious book that makes an important contribution to Kant studies.
Purposiveness without a Purpose
Grant details: FA-37510-03
Author(s): Alix Cohen
Publication: Metascience
Date: 7/1/2009
Abstract: There is no doubt that Zuckert achieves her aim in a way
that should open up interesting debates in Kant scholarship. For, by
grounding her interpretation of the concept of purposiveness without
a purpose’ on Kant’s account of our judgments about organisms,
Kant on Beauty and Biology should lead to a re-evaluation of traditional
understandings of this concept in aesthetic judgment.

Rachel Zuckert, Kant on Beauty and Biology: An Interpretation of the Critique of Judgment
Grant details: FA-37510-03
Author(s): Mark Fisher
Publication: Journal of the History of Philosophy
Date: 1/1/2009
Abstract: Zuckert has succeeded in providing a novel, provocative, and potentially attractive
alternative to other available interpretations of the CJ. She also seems to be right about
several important issues, including the importance of Kant’s criticism of the Leibnizean-
Wolffian tradition in aesthetics and teleology, not only for the project of the CJ itself, but
also for the historical transition in German thought from the pre-Kantian metaphysics of
perfection to the post-Kantian metaphysics of the subject. Even those who agree with her
general criticisms of the standard view, however, are likely to find Zuckert’s positive claims
concerning Kant’s principle of judgment, and the transition in his own view of subjectivity,
to be more suggestive than conclusive.

Abstract: #3 on top-10 DVD list: "This collection of features, shorts, documentaries, newsreels, travelogues and fragments from the silent and early sound era is more about preservation and education than simple entertainment, but it is entertaining as well as revealing. It's a record of the American West as it was transforming from frontier to modern world, as viewed through fictional representations and documentary recordings. The richness of offerings and the span of formats presents a visual record that makes the case for film preservation better than any lecture."

Grant details: FA-37990-03
Author(s): Robert C. Lagueux
Publication: voiceXchange
Date: 9/30/2009
Abstract: From final paragraph: "The
book’s title, though, captures the most significant contribution of this book. By considering the
relationship among tone-system, mode, and notation over nine centuries, from Martianus to
Marchetto, Atkinson powerfully illustrates the benefit of an integrative approach to scholarship:
one that harnesses a scrupulous attention to detail in the service of a larger context. The Critical
Nexus will change the way we think about music theory and notation, certainly, and it should
also serve as a model for future study."

Abstract: “With his publication of Johann Nepomuk Hummel: A Musician’s Life and World, Mark Kroll has filled an important gap in the literature.”
“Kroll’s biography…has the distinction of being the first English-language biography on Hummel’s life and career from birth to death.”
“Substantial documentation and commentary in the form of endnotes rounds out the chapter (and each subsequent one).”
“…its undeniable status as the only English-language biography on Hummel makes it an extremely important addition to any library with a music collection. It should prove useful to anyone interested in Hummel or in any one of the composers among his circle of friends and associates.”

Abstract: The WordSeer tool, developed at the University of California, Berkley by Aditi Muralidharan and Marti Hearst with research partner Bryan Wagner, is an exploratory analysis or “sensemaking” environment for literary texts. The tool is based on an understanding of literary analysis as a cyclical, rather than a linear, process, a notion that has been underemphasized in tool development where visualizations and datamining have generally been seen as exposing the text for scholarly treatment. WordSeer allows you to read a text, search for relationships between words and phrases, examine grammatical relationships, and examine produced heat map and tree visualizations.

Abstract: This, the latest contribution to the growing and impressive Records of Early English Drama collection, offers high standards of textual presentation and provides a rich insight into many aspects of dramatic activity in the city of Chester and the county in which it is situated. In spite of the uniformity of outward appearance, however, the individual volumes in the REED collection give very different insights into the individual counties and cities upon which they are focused, and it seems important to draw attention here to the strengths and particular emphases of this new volume.

Author(s): Pieter Mannaerts

Date: 3/30/2010
Abstract: Last paragraph: "A modest book review cannot possibly
convey the richness of a study such as The
Critical Nexus. Charles Atkinson analyzes his
sources with wonderful precision and constructs
his argument with great clarity, always
careful to do justice to the authors, to
highlight their specific contributions, and
to show the evolution of the recurrent
Leitmotive throughout this fascinating history.
All readers, regardless of their level of
specialization, will find their understanding
both broadened and deepened. To be sure,
this is a work that merits to become a classic,
that deserves to be read and reread,
studied and discussed among students and
scholars time and again, and is therefore
highly recommended to all musicologists
and libraries."

Abstract: First paragraph: "As promised by the title, this book traces a ‘nexus’ of interrelated themes – harmonic
space, its division into smaller units according to varied patterns of tones and
semitones, attempts to reconcile an inherited tone-system with a repertoire created
outside its ambit, and endeavours to endow the melodies with visual shape. As the
author acknowledges, the foundations of this book, much of which has to do with
tracing the sometimes shifting meaning of terms, had already been laid in previous
articles on the polyvalent terminology of medieval music theory. Two of the most
important terms were clarified in Atkinson’s masterly articles ‘Modus’ and ‘Tonos/
tonus’ for the Handwörterbuch der musikalischen Terminologie (1996 and 2005). Large
portions of the present book are taken up with similarly astute analyses of musical
and grammatical terminology."

Abstract: last paragraph: "An especially valuable contribution of The Critical Nexus is its engagement with Alia
musica. This group of treatises is perhaps best known for conflating the modes of
Boethius, based on octave species, with the church modes familiar to singers. Because its
enigmatic text and the lack of an available translation have hindered the full recognition
of Alia musica in general music histories, Atkinson’s explanation of its contents is indispensable
in itself. More important, however, is his new hypothesis about the chronology
of the various layers, based on manuscript and textual evidence. Whereas Jacques Chailley
had posited three authors and placed the completion of the treatise in the early tenth
century, Atkinson finds four main authors, the last working in the late tenth or early
eleventh century. As he makes clear, the most lasting contribution of the fourth author
was to show that the plagal and authentic modes were distinguished by the relative
positions of their co

Review: ‘The Golden Bride’ Walks Down the Aisle Again

Publication: New York Times
Date: 12/9/2015
Abstract: A farcical, tuneful romance that’s part old-fashioned musical comedy, part straight-up opera, “The Golden Bride” (“Di Goldene Kale”) is an immigrant fantasy that looks as fondly on Mother Russia as on Uncle Sam. With music by Joseph Rumshinsky, lyrics by Louis Gilrod and a libretto by Frieda Freiman — immigrants all — it was a hit when it opened in 1923.
In a handsome new large-cast production, presented by the National Yiddish Theater Folksbiene at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, it’s still deeply satisfying.

Publication: Idiom Magazine
Date: 6/30/2010
Abstract: IDIOM magazine writes: "There are countless exhibitions, books, films, plays, and dances, like Alvin Ailey’s seminal Revelations, that rely on image to capture the civil rights movement in the United States, especially the bloody struggles of the late fifties, sixties and seventies. The particular intelligence of this exhibition is its focus on the relationship between the image and the struggle, not only at the micro-level of its evocative emotional power, but in the broader context of the media explosion of the mid-twentieth century. To this end, 'this exhibition of 230 objects and clips from television and film examines the extent to which the rise of the modern civil rights movement paralleled the birth of television and the popularity of picture magazines and other forms of visual mass media' . . . .”

The Find: Images from the Civil Rights Movement
Grant details: GI-50135-09
Publication: Boston Globe
Date: 4/11/2010
Abstract: A mini-review of FOR ALL THE WORLD TO SEE in the BOSTON GLOBE'S "The Find" column in its Sunday book review:
"In 1955, the photograph of Emmett Till’s mutilated body was for many African-Americans the visual equivalent of a knock-out punch. No mainstream newspaper or magazine published the photo, but the black press did. That single image played a powerful role in building the civil rights movement, we learn in Maurice Berger’s “For All the World to See: Visual Culture and the Struggle for Civil Rights’’ (Yale University), being published April 20 to coincide with the opening of a touring exhibit co-presented by the Smithsonian. The book also looks beyond news headlines, analyzing Walt Disney’s “Song of the South,’’ Aunt Jemima, and the 1967 TV show “Julia,’’ in which racism was mainly a thing of the past . . . "

Publication: Choice
Date: 9/1/2010
Abstract: The American Library Association reviews the companion book for For All the World to See and names it a Choice Outstanding Academic Title 2010, in the category of Art and Architecture:
"In this compelling, insightful book, cultural historian and art critic Berger (Univ. of Maryland, Baltimore County) underscores the myriad ways that images in advertising, film, photojournalism, and television fashioned and fortified the modern civil rights movement from the early 1950s to the mid 1970s. Echoing cultural critic bell hooks's assertion that the struggle for black liberation was a battle for both visual and political representation, Berger demonstrates how civil rights leaders fought to replace century-old caricatures of doting mammies, entertaining dandies, and exotic primitives with positive portrayals of modern, self-assured, and successful citizens. Analyzing representations of race in the news and entertainment industries, Berger shows how black leaders orchestrated media events to ro

Review of Charles M. Atkinson, The Critical Nexus: Tone-System, Mode, and Notation in Early Medieval Music (Oxford University Press, 2009)
Grant details: FA-37990-03
Author(s): Jeremy Grall
Publication: Music Theory Online
Date: 7/30/2011
Abstract: Second paragraph: "The Critical Nexus seeks to clarify the hazy transition from early Greek music theories of the Greater and Lesser Perfect
systems to the early medieval tonal, modal, and notational systems. The book draws various early theoretical treatises together
and presents them in an accessible, unified study. Atkinson is particularly successful in navigating the period sources and tracing
the lineage of changing definitions and problems of translation. The great virtue of the book is that it is at once the most
comprehensive and the most intelligible treatment of early tone theory to date. Atkinson’s scholarship is thorough throughout
and he shows an admirable sensitivity to the balance between theory and practice. One gets the impression that this book was
both a labor of love and the type of work that only comes out of decades of deliberation."

Abstract: The U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 is a topic that has been greatly contested
and analyzed through the years and continues to garner attention
as new perspectives enter the debate. Kathryn Zabelle Derounian-
Stodola, professor of English at the University of Arkansas, explores
this topic through an analysis of captivity narratives in The War in
Words: Reading the Dakota Conflict through the Captivity Literature.
Derounian-Stodola’s interest in the subject was fostered by her

Abstract: In The War in Words: Reading the Dakota Conflict
through the Captivity Literature, Kathryn
Zabelle Derounian-Stodola analyzes twentyfour
captivity narratives—
both

unpublished—
from
the Dakota War of 1862.
She uses these narratives to address issues
of “ethnicity, identity, war, memory, and
narrative” (p. 2). The 1862 war lasted only six
weeks and is generally overshadowed by the
country’s Civil War. Despite its short duration,
the war was, and still is, highly controversial,
with both Dakotas and European Americans
telling radically different stories about the
conflict. Derounian-Stodola uses captivity
narratives to explore this divisive war from
multiple perspectives. The resulting text
offers an invaluable contribution to those
interested in Dakota, American Indian, and
Minnesota history, as well as information
about captivity narratives in general.
The first several chapters of the book provide
a brief introduction to Dakota captivity
narratives and the events of the

Review by Wendy Lucas Castro, University of Central Arkansas
In The War in Words, Kathryn Zabelle Derounian-Stodola uses twenty-four captivity narratives in what she describes as “part literary history, part textual analysis, part historiography, and part cultural contextualization” (1) to examine the Dakota War of 1862. Not only does she utilize these narratives to discuss a single war, an innovative approach which could easily be used to study other Euro-Indian wars; Derounian-Stodola also draws on Anglo, German, and Indian (including mixed-blood) narratives who were either eyewitnesses or participants. These narratives are supplemented with biographical and archival evidence, including unpublished letters and coverage of the war in local newspapers to supplement detai

Abstract: The American Indian captivity narrative occupies a contested space in Native/American literature. On the one hand, many American Literature scholars believe that the production of the captivity narrative marked the beginning of a new original ?American? literary tradition. The so-called ?birth? of the American colonial captivity narrative with the publication of Mary White Rowlandson’s The Sovereignty and Goodness of God (1682) features the harrowing experiences of a white captive held hostage by ?savage? Wampanoag captors. The genre eventually evolved to encompass a wide range of diverse narrative styles of fiction and auto/biography, including the slave narrative and the sentimental novel of seduction. In each of these distinct, yet related forms the captivity plot resolves with the ransom, rescue, escape, or transculturation of the captive. Research in the field by Betty Donahue, Scott Lyons, Yael Ben-zvi, and Stephen Brandon takes into consideration the counter-captivity narratives

Abstract: The Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s (Lacma) commitment to raising the profile of the historic art of Latin America continues with this international loan exhibition organised by the LA museum and Mexico City’s Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia.
“Contested Vision in the Spanish Colonial World” traces how art made by indigenous peoples, Spanish and mestizos, those of mixed Spanish and Indian heritage, reflected the cultural complexities and continuities of life after the arrival of the Conquistadors and Christian missionaries.
It follows “The Arts in Latin America, 1492-1820”, a panoramic view of the arts of the Spanish New World organised by Lacma, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso, Mexico City (2006-07), and Lacma’s redisplay of its permanent collection in 2008. Through “Contested Visions”, Ilona Katzew, Lacma’s curator of Latin American art, wants to move away from a simplistic idea that there was a cultural “break” after th

Abstract: Check out the outfit on the woman to the left of this devotional work, Our Lady of Cocharcas - Virgin with Indian Worshipers. It’s a striped woolen shawl worn by the Aymara, an indigenous group native to the region around La Paz, where this painting was made by an unknown artist in 1752.
Now look the elaborate feather headdresses worn by the other donors, part of an ensemble more appropriate to warriors from the Amazon.
That’s the artist’s conception of the Chunchos, a native group considered more pagan and savage than the Aymara, who lived amidst the Spaniards as converts to Christianity.
In scenes depicted in not only in paintings but also on queros (Andean drinking vessels), Aymara men often dressed—and danced—as these lowlands Indians in festivals to make a complex statement about their own identity. One motive, it’s thought, was to act out in ways that were normally off limits in colonial society—while another was to highlight their own subservience to the people in charge by

Abstract: If the Los Angeles County Museum of Art can be faulted for any shortcoming these days, it can't be for lack of ambition.
The museum has recently opened two sprawling, ambitious exhibitions: "Contested Visions in the Spanish Colonial World," and "California Design, 1930-1965: Living in a Modern Way." They're both in LACMA's new, $53 million Resnick Pavilion.
Next door at the 3-year-old Broad Contemporary Art Museum, "Asco: Elite of the Obscure" and "Glenn Ligon: America" explore chapters and aspects of recent American history and culture that aren't frequently brought to light.
"Contested Visions" is the newest show, examining the art and representations of indigenous peoples in colonial Mexico and Peru from the 15th to the 19th centuries. The exhibit features about 200 works of art, including paintings, sculptures, codices, manuscripts, queros (ceremonial drinking vessels), featherworks and other objects.

Abstract: Before the Spaniards conquered the Americas, the Aztecs and Incas already had rich and varied artistic traditions - and they subsequently flourished even as European customs got layered on top.
"It's that very careful and fine balance of negotiation and mutual adjustment, and accommodation of systems of value, power and art, that you can see here," says Ilona Katzew, curator of "Contested Visions in the Spanish Colonial World," on view through Jan. 29 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Nearly 10 years in the making, the exhibition illustrates what happened when cultures collided as featured in the more than 200 works including sculptures, textiles, paintings, manuscripts and other objects drawn from Mexico and Peru
from the 15th to the 19th centuries.
The works are organized into six sections, beginning with one that brings together pre-conquest monumental Aztec sculptures juxtaposed with exquisite Incan textiles.

You may indicate in your report that it is something innovative for paleography in Spanish since there is no similar web page, thus I believe it is fundamental to translate its functioning to Spanish.”
“The page is very good, in these cases the good ideas are more important than the resources, though I hope you may continue with the project and may receive more funding. I think the system of dividing the words within the document itself is very intuitive since it allows to navigate it (this is something that had not yet appeared in other webpages, your true comparative strength), maybe the system of the pdfs with the transcription is somewhat more cumbersome since it is

Review: Marguerite H. Rippy, Orson Welles and the Unfinished RKO Projects: A Postmodern Perspective.
Grant details: FT-52626-04
Author(s): Matt Wanat
Publication: Screening the Past
Date: 4/18/2010
Abstract: Marguerite H. Rippy’s book on Orson Welles offers a provocative, ground-breaking, and occasionally scattered exploration of Welles’s construction as a ‘star director’ and the significance of this cultural-textual project to a variety of modern and postmodern aspects of twentieth-century media. While Rippy explicitly sets out to privilege the ‘postmodern perspective’, her book ultimately succeeds in a broader project that integrates an array of extra-diegetic and intra-diegetic concerns, some fundamentally postmodern and others perhaps not.

Abstract: The latest addition to the ongoing conversation about Welles is Marguerite H. Rippy’s Orson Welles and the Unfinished RKO Projects, which focuses on the director’s work in the 1940s. During that period, he made Citizen Kane and The Magnificent Ambersons, as well as the aborted It’s All True, the movie largely responsible for derailing his career in Hollywood. He also embarked on a number of lesser known productions left unfinished but which offer key insights into his working methods, thematic preoccupations and enduring legacy in American filmmaking.

Contested Visions at LACMA
Grant details: MP-50009-06
Author(s): William Poundstone
Publication: Los Angeles County Museum on Fire
Date: 11/14/2011
Abstract: LACMA’s new mega-exhibition, “Contested Visions in the Spanish Colonial World” brings together about 200 Aztec, Inca, and Spanish Colonial objects, with a special focus on Colonial painting. Much of the painting works like north-of-the-Rio-Grande folk art, only darker and more ambivalent. I don’t suppose Ammi Phillips or Grandma Moses were sublimating rage against the Eurotrash overlords. In Mexico and Peru, it was a little more dicey.
The first few rooms display Mexican and Peruvian objects from about the time of the conquest. (Left, silver maize stalks, supporting the conquistador legend that the Incas had a sterling silver corn field.) After that, it’s a wild ride. The exhibition is really about what came after, the hybrid “colonial” art that museums and collectors once shunned as inauthentic.
The Incas had no tradition of portraiture until the Spanish came along and slaughtered everybody worth portraying. Forty years after the conquest, Tupac Amaru launched a neo-Inca rebellion (

Art Review: Contested Visions in the Spanish Colonial World, LACMA
Grant details: MP-50009-06
Author(s): Christopher Knight
Publication: Los Angeles Times
Date: 11/30/2011
Abstract: In 1910 a California company produced a tourist postcard showing a flatbed railroad car rumbling across the sun-drenched Golden State, hauling just two strawberries. Each fruit was roughly the size of a pachyderm. The picture is an early example of what soon became a flood of promotional images that cast the place as an exotic but industrious region of unimaginable wonders.
Mars always needs women, but early 20th century California needed to attract people too. A picture of gargantuan strawberries might not be taken literally by the postcard's bemused recipient, but the enticing enthusiasm of its message was clear.
Although the "big berries" pitch today appears quaint, it was hardly unprecedented. Not by a long shot. About 125 years before, similar representations were made in Ecuador.
At the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, a large and engrossing new show includes four big canvases painted in 1783 by Vicente Albán. Just a few of the 181 rarely traveled works assembled for

LACMA's Ilona Katzew muses on the worlds of Contested Visions
Grant details: MP-50009-06
Author(s): Reed Johnson
Publication: Los Angeles Times
Date: 12/12/2011
Abstract: While coming of age as a Mexico City teenager, Ilona Katzew used to skip school to hang out in the capital's ornate Baroque churches and treasure-stuffed museums. The experience was an education in itself, a sensory immersion in the soul of a city that was a teeming metropolis decades before Columbus set foot in the New World.
"Growing up in Mexico City I was always aware of the culture around me," Katzew said during a recent interview at LACMA, where she serves as department head of Latin American art. "It was just something that I had in me, for better or for worse."
Katzew has put that background to work repeatedly at LACMA with several popular, academically impressive shows that bridge antique and modern sensibilities. They include "Casta Painting: Images of Race in Eighteenth-Century Mexico" in 2004, and "The Arts in Latin America: 1492-1820," a 2007 production that Times art critic Christopher Knight dubbed a "landmark" for revealing both the ornamental pomp and "trippy" in

Grant details: MP-50009-06
Author(s): Christopher Knight
Publication: Los Angeles Times
Date: 12/15/2011
Abstract: In chronological order of their opening, these are the nine California museum shows, plus one show that could have been, that I enjoyed most in 2011 (the final three are still on view):
Charles Garabedian: A Retrospective, Santa Barbara Museum of Art. An innovator in the return to national prominence of figurative painting more than 30 years ago, Garabedian took his place among the best painters Los Angeles has produced.
Thomas Gainsborough and the Modern Woman, San Diego Museum of Art. A concise gem of a show that demonstrated how the British artist’s pictures of women, many of them performers, underscored the theatrical power of Gainsborough’s own dazzling brush.
William Leavitt: Theater Objects, Museum of Contemporary Art. After 40 years of making mass media-inflected paintings and installations that hummed along just below the larger public radar, Leavitt stepped forward in a retrospective survey that had the quiet force of revelation.

She lauds the completed work as a "treasure-trove" for word lovers and naturalists, and as a reflection of our immigration patterns. She notes that browsing the citations can be entertaining and enlightening. DARE's enduring value will be as a record of the "down-home' speech of Americans.

The Enlightenment Qur'an: The Politics of Translation and the Construction of Islam (review)
Grant details: FA-51836-05
Author(s): Bridget Pupillo
Publication: MLN
Date: 9/1/2010
Abstract: The Enlightenment Qur'an is for its reader, as the Qur'an itself was for Voltaire, a good tool to think with: it provides an inspirational point of departure for further studies of intercultural exchange throughout the long eighteenth century and beyond. The lucidity, [End Page 989] timeliness and erudition of this study ensures that Elmarsafy's Enlightenment Qur'an will stand as a worthy companion to Burman's earlier contribution on Europe's fascination with the sacred text of Islam.

Ameykanska biografia Mickiewicza i jej autor

Author(s): Marta Zielinska
Publication: Teksty Drugie
Date: 10/1/2011
Abstract: This discussion of the most recent biography of Adam Mickiewicz, by Roman R. Koropeckyj, presents the book in the context of the American Slavicist's entire output. Koropeckyj deals with Polish romanticist literature, and Mickiewicz in particular -- being an expert not only on the poet as such but also on all his existing biographies. This makes The Life of a Romantic an important contribution to the discussion on how the Polish Bard's life is represented in what has been written about it, and in the way the biographies are written.

The Invisible Line
Grant details: FB-50300-04
Author(s): Wilbert Rideau
Publication: Financial Times
Date: 2/21/2011
Abstract: “In this meticulously researched history, Sharfstein’s ace-in-the-hole is his ability to recreate dramatic events and build flesh-and-blood characters from courthouse records, family letters, or forgotten contemporaneous accounts. He sets out to change the way we think about race, and he succeeds brilliantly in showing us that before politics began hardening colour lines in the run-up to the civil war, pragmatism often trumped prejudice. . . [F]or me, what makes this book a must-read are Sharfstein’s revelations about antebellum America.”

Author(s): Raymond Arsenault
Publication: New York Times
Date: 2/27/2011
Abstract: “In an illuminating and aptly titled book, The Invisible Line, Daniel J. Sharfstein demonstrates that African-Americans of mixed ancestry have been crossing the boundaries of color and racial identity since the early colonial era. An associate professor of law at Vanderbilt University and an author with a literary flair, Sharfstein documents this persistent racial fluidity by painstakingly reconstructing the history of three families. In a dizzying array of alternating chapters, he presents the personal and racial stories of the Gibsons, the Spencers and the Walls. The result is an astonishingly detailed rendering of the variety and complexity of racial experience in an evolving national culture moving from slavery to segregation to civil rights.’’

'The Invisible Line,' by Daniel J. Sharfstein
Grant details: FB-50300-04
Author(s): Bruce Watson
Publication: San Francisco Chronicle
Date: 2/27/2011
Abstract: "Despite an African American president and the annual Black History Month, racial amnesia remains widespread. Everyone knows when slavery ended, but few know how Slavery Lite continued under the oppressive sharecropper system. The persistence of such amnesia long after the triumphs of the civil rights movement makes 'The Invisible Line' must reading.
"With dogged research, lawyer and journalist Daniel J. Sharfstein has stitched together the stories of three families toeing America's racial trip wire across several generations. Woven into a novelistic narrative, 'The Invisible Line' presents a primer on the hypocrisies that confronted everyday Americans from the Revolution through to the 1960s."

Abstract: It is practically a truism of literary theory that poststructuralism is anti-humanist as well as anti-classical, and that the "swerve into poststructuralism was a turning against humanism, against the traditional values of Western civilization."1 Miller provides a fundamental challenge to this proposition, and in a thoughtful and deeply researched study of Lacan, Derrida, and Foucault, shows the great extent to which these critical titans all relied on exegesis of Plato and other texts of classical antiquity to articulate their philosophies. In so doing, Miller addresses directly one of the most important questions confronting classical studies as a discipline: namely, the value and relevance of a classical canon in the face of poststructuralism and its off-shoots in deconstruction, gender theory, and postcolonialism. Miller is obviously not the first to address this question, but I believe he has offered a significant argument that inscribes the classics into postmodernism, as opposed

Abstract: “The aim of the website is clearly explained in its home page, it attempts to offer help to those interested in learning to decipher texts from the Spanish modern period. Because its command is indispensable for historical studies, paleography is a science with a long tradition. As a beginner student or researcher in these techniques, the initial difficulty in understanding the texts, plus the great diversity of handwriting types, often times have a considerably disappointing impact.
This is why the use of digital technologies and Internet with didactic purposes has been considered a useful resource in the field of paleography. During my studies at the University of Amsterdam I had access to an online tool for the learning of the reading of texts in Dutch from the modern period. it consisted of an alphabet that included the variances used for each letter, as well as a series of texts with their corresponding transcription. Though it was a helpful support during my learning proc

Abstract: “I congratulate you for the great work you have accomplished. The Spanish Paleography Digital Teaching and Learning Tool is an excellent tool, with a very friendly user interface that facilitates the study of the various types of Spanish handwriting styles of the 16th and 17th centuries through digitized facsimiles. It could be very useful to initiate university students in paleographic research not only in Latin America but also in Spain, where we keep magnificent archives with documents of great interest for dissemination and pedagogical use. Regretfully, in Spain we have not contemplated yet projects as interesting as this one accomplished by the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute (CUNY DSI) at the City College of New York. To be truthful, until now I only knew of the [contra]TAEDIUM project produced by several specialists in paleography and medieval history of the University of Barcelona:

Date: 10/2/2011
Abstract: With dramatic readings transporting listeneres to far-off times and locales and evoking half-forgotten memories, the V.I. Humanities Council launched its conference Friday at Government House in Christiansted. About 175 residents attending "We the People -- Place, Time & Memory: 'Story Toh Tell!" delighted to poetry, theater and movement. Appropriately enough, some of the poetry read was that of Marvin E. Williams, who was honored posthumously by the council with its Humanist Award
