Abstract: This book offers a history of fear and anxiety in postwar Germany. By demonstrating how recurring cycles of fear and anxiety shaped the history of West Germany, it counters more teleological narratives of the Federal Republic's progressive democratization and liberalization. The book contains a introduction, eight case studies of cycles of fear from the 1940s to the 1980s, and an epilogue that discusses the significance of the history of fear after 1945 for contemporary society and politics.
