Abstract: "Inventing a 'Negro Literature': Race, Dialect, and Gender in the Early Work of Paul Laurence Dunbar, James Weldon Johnson, and Alice Dunbar-Nelson," is a chapter in the book I co-edited with Barbara McCaskill. It argues that the self-conscious creation of a "Negro Literature," often linked to the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, instead begins with the turn-of-the-century writings of Dunbar, Johnson, Dunbar-Nelson, and others. It further argues that the question of language--how to employ black dialect and formal English--and of gender are crucial to this new domain of literary production.
