Revelry, Rivalry, and Longing for the Goddesses of Bengal: The Fortunes of Hindu Festivals (Book)
Title: Revelry, Rivalry, and Longing for the Goddesses of Bengal: The Fortunes of Hindu Festivals
Author: Rachel Fell McDermott
Abstract: Annually during the months of Autumn, Bengal hosts three interlinked festivals to honor its most important goddesses: Durga, Kali, and Jagaddhatri. This volume recounts the history of these festivals. The author describes the festivals' origins and growth under British rule, and confronts controversies over the tradition of blood sacrifice. She also traces the transformation of the goddesses beyond Bengal's borders to festivals across the world.
