Planning a Minor in Medical Humanities

FAIN: AKA-291044-23

Baldwin Wallace University (Berea, OH 44017-2005)
Denise Kohn (Project Director: September 2022 to present)

A one-year initiative to develop a new minor in medical and health humanities with the aim of attracting students in the health sciences as well as from STEM, business, and the humanities

We wish to plan a new, innovative minor in Medical Humanities and Health at our institution, which is located within minutes Cleveland’s world-class medical and healthcare complex in Northeast Ohio. The interdisciplinary nature of Medical and Health Humanities will allow Baldwin Wallace to create new and robust connections between students and faculty in the School of Humanities with the Schools of Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Health Sciences on our campus.

Abstract: Poster presentation: An interprofessional (IP) approach was used to collaborate in planning a Health Humanities minor, with support in part through a Humanities Connections grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The purpose of this project was to conduct a scoping review of the literature with the intent to synthesize existing research and inform curriculum development. This scoping review will synthesize and map best-practice guidelines for integrating undergraduate health humanities curricula and course integration. The following questions will guide the review: What frameworks are used to implement a health humanities curriculum? What concepts and pedagogy are addressed in a health humanities curriculum?
