Planning
for the reinterpretation of an 1850s U.S. Army fort in south-central Colorado.
History Colorado seeks funding for a Historic Places Planning Grant to fund a revised interpretive plan for the Fort Garland Museum and Cultural Center, located in the San Luis Valley of south-central Colorado. The interpretation will navigate the rich history of the region and explore the humanities themes of 1) environment has a cultural impact, 2) borderlands define and impact political and social history, 3) cultures influence the traditions of the region and have created layers of identity, and 4) engagement, activism, and community memory help to define the resilience of the borderlands.

Fort Garland Museum & Cultural Center Guiding Framework 2024 (Report)Title: Fort Garland Museum & Cultural Center Guiding Framework 2024
Author: Dr. Deanna Dartt
Author: Live Oak Consulting
Abstract: In September 2023, Live Oak Consulting was hired to work towards the development of an Interpretive Assessment that would reflect the needs, goals, values of those most invested in the history of southern Colorado, the San Luis Valley, and the fort itself. This Guiding Framework will allow the museum a scaffold for planning and the next phase toward museum- wide re-interpretation. It is not intended to be the plan but a report of ideas and recommendations we have made based on assessment of collected resources and conversations (1. archival and past interpretive materials, 2. public spaces, and 3. engagement with scholars, staff and tribal groups through interviews and listening sessions). This Framework
aims to document where the Fort Garland Museum & Cultural Center has been and dreams about where it could go. The goal is that with this report, the museum can have focused, meaningful, community conversations toward a full reinterpretation, while also providing
immediate actions that the museum can take toward creating a cohesive narrative for visitors.
