Endowment for staff positions in the library's Manuscripts and Archives Division.

A challenge grant of $1 million, together with $4 million in matching gifts, will create an endowment to help firmly establish The New York Public Library’s Manuscripts and Archives Division--whose extensive collections of unique, primary source materials are among the largest in the nation--as a model archival resource for scholarship and education. The endowment will help address important challenges now facing the nation’s major archival repositories. Funds will support 4.5 new staff positions to process collections, provide worldwide electronic access to detailed information on these extraordinary resources, and create a model program for collecting, preserving, and providing access to archival materials created in electronic form.
