Slavery and Emancipation in New England

A two-week summer institute for thirty school teachers on slavery and emancipation in New England from the colonial era to the Civil War.

The Harriet Beecher Stowe Center, a musuem, library and program center, proposes to conduct a two-week Teacher Institute during July 8-20,2007 devoted to the complex and multifaceted subject of slavery and emancipation in New England. Six subtopics will cover the experiences of people of color in New England from the early colonial period up to the Civil War and the race relations that were their legacy. Preeminent scholars of American history and/or literature will present lectures and discussions to thirty American history teachers. During the Institute teachers will review recent and classic scholarship in each of the six subtopics, examine primary source documents, visit four museum sites, view a new documentary film and research and develop complete written lesson plans based on the materials and experiences.
