Fellow to finish book from research already completed on form and structure of the town in medieval and early modern Europe; emphasis on layout, planning, social-functional building, and location of such construction within or immediately adjacent to town; balance between urban and rural population centers; within town, relationship between the form and structure of the community to social, political, and religious life of inhabitants. No competent study of this nature exists. During a period of urban crisis, project of central importance to humanistic understanding of how we have lived and now live. Relevant to contemporary urban planning.
