To explain the cultural as well as economic forces that promote the political mobilization of the SE Asian's folk values. Study has three objectives: 1) to explain the structural basis for the opposition between folk culture and the extra-village elite; 2) to show how cooperation between peasants and elite can break down and give rise to conflict; 3) to tract how peasant politics may become incorporated into national politics.
