To study the implications of modern perception theory for an understanding of certain techniques in 20th century fiction. The study will center on a particular tradition in the modern novel, one of which is characterized by a shift in the focus of the novel away from a representation of the perceptual processes through which that 'reality' is apprehended. The study will Include analyses of five representative works: Proust's Du cote de chez Swann. Woolf's To the Lighthouse. Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury. Simon's L'Herbe. and Robbe-Grillet's La Jalousie.
