The Depression, War and Apartheid in a South Africa Karoo Town

To study the Depression, War, and Apartheid in the South African town of Cradock. Grantee will write a social history of the town relying heavily on oral sources. Sociology and demography will allow the grantee to draw two social profiles of the town. Biography will he used to describe key individuals and history, to provide a narrative subdivided by Depression, War, and Apartheid. Material will initially be collected in five key areas of interaction between the Africans, Coloreds, and Whites; employer-employee relations; services, especially health; education; order; commerce and marketing.
