To do the research necessary for the writing of a definitive, full- length literary biography of John Steinbeck. Steinbeck's family has given authorization for the project. Steinbeck is the only major American novelist from the first half of the 20th century who has not yet been the subject of a full-length biography. This study would become a major source of material for further Steinbeck scholarship and an important contribution to the study of modern literature in general.
