I am writing a book, entitled "German Utopias in Eastern Europe, 1914-1955: Modernity, National Identity, and Conflict", an historical study of four separate German projects for utopias of modernity situated in Eastern Europe. Using a wide range of hitherto neglected sources from popular culture, the visual arts, and propaganda, I explore changing German views of a cultural mission in Eastern Europe as a culmination of "alternative modernities", diverging from Western models earlier considered normative.
