The primary goal of this research project is to examine the role of ex-slaves, their descendants, and non-Arab groups in the development of popular culture in contemporary Sudan. The inquiry focuses on the contributions of these groups to the development of unique styles of music, performance, dance, fashion, and other cultural activities. The study also examines the impact of the policies of Arabization and Islamization of the present Sudanese government on popular culture and social life.
