Central Asia on the Frontier of Empire: The Khanate of Khoqand, 1709-1876

FAIN: FA-57195-13

Scott Cameron Levi
Ohio State University (Columbus, OH 43210-1349)

The aim of this project is to produce the first book to focus direct attention on the ways that early modern Central Asia actively engaged with the globalizing world. The book will also represent the first English-language history of the Khanate of Khoqand (1798-1876), an extraordinarily dynamic state that emerged during the eighteenth century in eastern Uzbekistan's Ferghana Valley. The study will analyze ways that global political, economic, technological and environmental developments influenced life in early modern Central Asia and contributed to the rise, and fall, of Khoqand. It will also illustrate the ways that Central Asians influenced the policies of their much larger imperial neighbors on the Eurasian periphery. The final product will be aimed at an audience that includes scholars and students with interests in Central Asian, Russian, Chinese and world history, as well as the study of comparative empire and the history of globalization.

Title: The Rise and Fall of Khoqand, 1709–1876: Central Asia in the Global Age
Author: Scott C. Levi
Abstract: Central Asia in the Global Age presents the first English-language history of the Khanate of Khoqand, a Central Asian state that emerged over the course of the eighteenth century, flourished and expanded by a factor of thirty in the early nineteenth century, and then collapsed utterly under the weight of Russian imperial expansion into the region. Combining his research in local sources with a world historical perspective, Scott Levi applies a “connected history” methodology to examine how Khoqand’s integration with globalizing forces shaped politics, economics, demographics, environment and lives in modern Uzbekistan’s Ferghana Valley, the heart of Central Asia. Levi also draws attention to ways that the Khanate of Khoqand resembles other states across both Asia and Africa that rose and fell on the frontiers of expanding empires. The richly illustrated book offers maps, a glossary and accessible prose that make it suitable for scholars, students and a general audience of readers whose interests touch upon the history of Central Asia, the Qing frontier, Russian imperial expansion, globalization and early modern world history.
