To study the peasant populations of nineteenth century Europe and the experiences of peasants in a modernizing continent. Of particular interest are those peasant populations which in the course of modernization were transformed into socially and occupationally differentiated national units, with national identities and national literatures, and with a future that saw them as soverign nations.
