Expressionistic and Surrealistic Impulses in Art

To study the expressionistic and surrealistic impulses in the various arts in the period between World War I and World War II, emphasizing the drama and its relation to the visual arts. Drama will be studied, in depth, especially, the workds of Luigi Pirandello, Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewcz, and Jean Cocteau. An attempt will be made to discover analogues between the subjects and techniques of their plays and those of the visual arts. Also, an attempt will be made to clarify the connections between the art and the general cultural milieu of the period.
