To study "The Uses of History in A la recherche du temps perdu, purposes being to attempt to evolve a critical framework for treating historical themes in Proust and other post-symbolist novelists. Critics of Faulkner, Proust,Joyce, and Woolf have emphasized the density of their language, their preoccupation with style, and the ways in which their writing conveys a highly personal, essentially imaginative rendering of experience. Papers will be written elaborating and exemplifying a critical system in which the specifically lyrically and specifically social aspects of their fiction can be viewed, not as separate entities, but as two manifestations of a single impulse to impose an imaginative order on the world.
