The recent discovery by French scholars of the well-established Anglo- Saxon discipline of analytical and textual bibliography explains the rapid development of "la bibliographie materielle" in France. This new discipline calls for a revised examination of earlier literary works to determine just what if any help can be derived in their understanding of these works and in the criticism of the texts which have come down to us. This study will focus on the transitional period just before the full flowering of the high Renaissance in French poetry
