To explore the ways in which the aging and the unmarried dramatically altered household situations, family cycles and work patterns in four upstate New York communities, Albany, Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse during a period when the aging and the unmarried became a visible and increasingly influential part of American communities, and helped to create ethnically divided cities.
