Augustine in the Italian Renaissance: Art and Philosophy from Petrarch to Michelangelo (Book)
Title: Augustine in the Italian Renaissance: Art and Philosophy from Petrarch to Michelangelo
Abstract: Augustine, the late antique Church Father, fascinated writers and artists of the Renaissance. They perceived him to be a conduit of classical and Christian truths and an example of the life of the intellect reconciled to a life of faith. This book traces the reception of Augustine from the fourteenth to the mid-sixteenth century and discusses the saint's influence on thinkers and humanists as well as his representation in the visual arts. Portrayed in several major fresco cycles, Augustine was also the subject of single portraitrs. In these, artists alluded to his aesthetic theory as articulated in his concept of divine illumination. The Sistine Chapel represents the fulfilment of Augustine's theological and philosophical legacy, one that began there in the fifteenth century and extended through the completion of Michelangelo's "Last Judgment."

Augustine Beyond the Book: Intermediality, Transmediality, and Reception (Book)
Title: Augustine Beyond the Book: Intermediality, Transmediality, and Reception
Editor: Karla Pollmann
Abstract: Augustine of Hippo (354-410) is arguably the most influential thinker and Latin author of the Early Christian period. His widespread legacy has been explored to date only in part, and largely with respect to his textual reception. This interdisciplinary volume attempts to redress this emphasis with a set of analyses of Augustine's impact in the visual arts, drama, devotional practices, music, the science-faith debate and psychotherapy. The result is a far more differentiated and dynamic picture of the mechanisms by which the legacy of an historical figure may be measured, allowing for the sometimes supra-rational and imaginative dimensions of transmission. These studies contribute to a picture of the universal and ubiquitous presence of Augustine in intellectual, spiritual and artistic terms.
