Mourning Dove: Her Life, Letters, and Translations of 37 Salish Narratives

FAIN: FB-50419-04

Alanna K. Brown
Montana State University (Bozeman, MT 59717-2470)

The Mourning Dove manuscript is the culmination of two decades of teaching about and doing research on this early Native American Salish author who lived during the period of intense settlement and assimilation pressures in the inland Northwest, both Canada and America (1880s-1930s). The 1400 pages already written include an introductory section on literary biography, then extensive correspondence revelatory about the times and processes of collaboration, and ends with transcriptions of her original translations of thirty-seven Salish genesis stories. Publication will contribute new information to the fields of Native American Studies, inland Northwest Territories and American social history, and American literature.
