This project explores the social position of the executioner and the logic of executions in old regime and revolutionary France. Its ultimate purpose is to gain an understanding of the circumstances of the birth of modern forms of punishment and to grasp precisely what was rejected when enlightenment reformers successfully redefined the theory and practice of punishment.
