ACTING ON FAITH will be the first integrative, interdisciplinary book devoted to a lay confraternity in Renaissance Italy. Rome's leading confraternity, the Gonfalone ("processional banner"), offers a pivotal microstudy of lay spirituality, artistic production and patronage, and performance practices. Digital reconstructions of extensive, unpublished Gonfalone properties will more accurately delineate the urban and spiritual topography of Renaissance Rome. NEH funding will support completion of the book through research in Rome, collaborative exchange at the University of Sydney, and focused writing at home with easy access to superb libraries.
