The Quarrel Between Poetry and Philosophy

FAIN: FF-10306-74

Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH 44106-1712)
M. R. Kadish (Project Director: January 1974 to present)

To examine the contemporary form and import of the quarrel between poetry and philosophy, first articulated by Plato, in terms of two primary issues: the epistemological and the esthetic. The possible relationships between the two issues will also be considered. The aim will be to develop a clearer understanding of the argument between the protagnonists of analysis and reason on the one hand, and of experience and feeling on the other, so that participants can help students reflect more carefully on their preoccupation with experience as distinct from reason and their frequent distrust of the humanistic tradition.
