Rhetorical Invention in Nineteenth Century Britain

To undertake a study of theories of rhetorical invention in 19th century Britain. It is generally acknowledged that the rhetorical works of Hugh Blair, George Campbell, and Richard Whately were dominant throughout the period. Study will focus on invention because it is this element of the classical canon that was most significantly altered during this period. Study will investigate three sources of speculation on rhetoric in the 19th century: the universities, the periodicals, and rhetorical treatises and textbooks. Blair, Campbell, and Whately all held university posts when their rhetorical treatises were published.
