Seventeenth-Century Poetry: the Individual in a Century of Revolution

This seminar will deal with major poets of the 17th century: Donne and Herbert; Jonson and Herrick; Marvell; Milton and Dryden. The poetical works will he considered in terms of the poets' sense of themselves in relation to their revolutionary times. The poets will he used to exemplary and theoretical ends, so that participants in the seminar can use what they have learned to teach other college courses on quite different literary subjects.
