Summer Seminar Entitled: Realism, Impressionism, Anti-Realism in the Modern Novel

FAIN: FS-10572-78

Albert J. Guerard
Stanford University (Stanford, CA 94305-2004)

To examine a variety of critical approaches to novels in the realist tradition and, in more detail, novels in the impressionist and anti-realist or experimental modes. Ultimate objective is to increase undergraduate awareness of a novel's fictional energies and aesthetic pleasures, rather than simply its picture or criticism of life. Reading will be drawn from works of criticism, as well as the following fiction: Martin Chuzzlewit, Great Expectations, The Secret Agent, The Great Gatsby, Lord Jim, Absalom, Absalom! Under the Volcano, Ulysses, Second Skin.
