Readings in theory of laughter and the comic, ranging from Aristotle to contemporary research in psychology, ethology, and stylistics. Inquiry as to the relationship between theory and practice. Comedies of Moliere and Shakespeare will invite consideration of French and Anglo-Saxon practice, and of the theory which diverges from it. Reading will also include Beckett, perhaps by way of Rabelais and Joyce, Tati and Chaplin.
