The Use of Poetry in Community College Remedial English Courses

Fellow to structure an approach to the use of poetry in community college remedial English courses. Published findings of high school and college teachers will be examined to determine what, if any, experimentation has been done in the field and then poems will be organized for presentation in class. The objective is to determine whether or not exposure to poetry can sharpen the critical faculties and reading ability of remedial students. Fellow publishes Pierson Spring, a quarterly poetry magazine, primarily for new unpublished poets, and teaches two remedial English classes at Monroe Country Community College.
