To investigate Honore Daumier's (1808-1879) use of pose, gesture and grimace, their sources and expression, and the way it is specifically applied to and developed within the motif of the spectator. The motif of the spectator as spectacle emerges in the art of Daumier and subsequently becomes popular in Impressionsist painting.
