To investigate the capacity of language in general and literature in particular to communicate the phenomenon of physical pain. In addition to an examination of literary texts there will be an examinations of attempts to portray pain in painting (e.g., Bacon, Goya), film (e.g., Bergman, Wertmuller), and philosophy (e.g., Wittgenstein Nietzche).
